
Biography
Born in Cumaná, Venezuela, Tania Arazi Coambs is a passionate and versatile performer, director, writer, scholar, and theatre maker.
Recognized for her “searing and intense acting and singing,” Tania has performed in venues around the world—from the Shaw Theatre in London, to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Urbania City Theater in Italy, the Errol Hill Theater in Bridgetown, Barbados, the Muson Centre in Lagos, Nigeria, and with the Amadeus Opern Ensemble in Salzburg, Austria. Performance highlights include Francesca in The Bridges of Madison County, Kate in Human Terrain, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Gretel in Hansel und Gretel, Aldonza in The Man of La Mancha, Aline in The Sorcerer, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, Linfea in La Calisto, Annie in The Game of Love, and originating the role of Dr. Vivian Watson in an international tour to Barbados, England, and Nigeria of the play Preemptive. She is a four-time recipient of the American Prize competition—including the winner of both The American Prize Professional Art Song Division and the winner of The American Prize Chicago Music Theater Award, where she made her début at Chicago Symphony Orchestra Hall on the “Something Wonderful” concert singing the music of Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein. She has performed throughout the Midwest at the Allerton Music Barn Festival, Illinois Opera Theater, the Station Theatre, Heartland Theatre Company, DLO Musical Theatre, with the Danville Symphony Orchestra, the Church Street Ramblers, and with her own jazz combo.
As a stage director, Tania served as the 2023 Apprentice Stage Director for the prestigious Merola Opera Program, where she directed the "Merola Grand Finale" on the stage of San Francisco Opera’s War Memorial Opera House. Tania is the recipient of the 2023-2024 JoElyn Wakefield Stage Director Fellowship from the National Opera Association. Previously, she was a resident stage director for Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh and a Stage Directors & Choreographers Foundation Observership Fellow. At the Station Theatre, Tania directed the first regional production of "Farinelli and the King" by Claire van Kampen. Passionate about developing new works, Tania has written and led collaborations on three new works productions, including an opera, Catatumbo; a devised theatre piece, No Words Left Behind; and a play, Stoplight.
Tania holds a DMA from the University of Illinois in Vocal Performance & Literature with a cognate in Stage Direction, and was awarded the National Opera Association’s 2018 – 2020 Biennial Dissertation Award for her dissertation entitled, "Redefining America Through Opera: Representation of Latin/o Americans and a New Tradition." Tania currently serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Theatre and Music at New College of Florida, where she teaches classes in Stage Directing, Acting, and Music. Later this year, she will be the incoming Artist-in-Residence at Allerton Park & Retreat Center, where she will be singing in recital with longtime collaborator, pianist Larisa Chasanov.
